AUGUSTA - The Maine CDC is urging everyone to protect themselves against mosquito bites after the first case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus has been detected in Maine this year.

They say the Maine resident became ill with severe symptoms in late August and remains hospitalized.

The Triple E results are considered presumptive while the Maine CDC awaits confirmation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Maine CDC says the risk of mosquito borne disease across the state is high this year, especially for Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset and Waldo Counties.

There are steps you can take to protect yourself.

They suggest applying insect repellent when outdoors.

Reschedule activities that happen at dusk or dawn which are peak mosquito hours.
