AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention says one person has been hospitalized with the first case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in a Maine resident this year.

The person became severely ill in late August with the locally-acquired virus, and test results are considered presumptive positive for EEE while confirmation is pending from the U.S. CDC, the Maine CDC said Tuesday. The threat of EEE is considered severe in Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, and Waldo counties.

EEE, Jamestown Canyon virus, and West Nile virus are all spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. They cannot spread from person to person or from people to animals.
