TAOS, N.M. (KRQE) – Taos County deputies were able to intervene to prevent a third suicide in 10 days at the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge outside of Taos. Deputies were dispatched to the gorge bridge on Tuesday morning, where a man had parked his car. Family members of the man had called and told dispatch that he was suffering a mental health episode. Deputies were able to talk the man out of the vehicle and brought him in for evaluation and assistance.

This is only the most recent incident, and Taos County Sheriff Steve Miera has asked lawmakers for help. Sheriff Miera said there are usually two to three suicides at the bridge a year, but so far this year, there have been five. The New Mexico Department of Transportation has been revisiting an old idea to build up the railing on the bridge.
