JENNINGS COUNTY, Ind. — One southern Indiana family truly has one of the largest trees in the nation.

Richard and Kris Schepman’s family farm, located outside of Crothersville, is home to a swamp chestnut oak that's just been recognized as the largest of its species in the U.S.

The Schepman family’s tree, which is on private property and isn’t available for public viewing, stands 95 feet tall, has a circumference of 318 inches, and a canopy spread of 118 feet.

On Tuesday, Gov. Mike Braun joined Indiana Department of Natural Resources leaders to recognize the Schepmans care for the impressive tree.

Braun said Indiana’s forested land has substantially grown with the help of Hoosiers’ conservation work and responsible stewardship.
