The public deserves answers about the recurring oily discharges in the Welland River in Chippawa, says Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates.

The New Democrat sent a letter Friday to Todd McCarthy, minister of environment, conservation and parks, requesting the ministry expedite any pending laboratory results related to the testing at the Welland River and to ensure appropriate compliance action, if warranted.

“As you know, this location has been the subject of ministry investigations for several years,” said Gates in the letter, which was obtained by the Niagara Falls Review. “Most recently, new samples were collected months ago on July 9 and 10, 2025.”

He said families live close to the area, while grandparents, parents and children spend time along the river.
