BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WSAV) - Hundreds of thousands of dollars are lost each year to scam calls with everchanging speeches and claims.

So what makes them so convincing, and why do people fall for them?

WSAV News 3 found out firsthand when both the Beaufort County Sheriff's Department (BCSO) and WSAV's Andrew Davis got calls from the criminals themselves.

This all started with a call from a Beaufort County "843" phone number with an ominous statement from a supposed Beaufort County sheriff's deputy.

The call began with an accusation of a federal warrant for arrest because of a missed jury duty.

"The criminal procedure way is basically you will come here, turn yourself in, be booked, fingerprinted, processed, and it would keep you in our custody 30 to 90 days" the scam artist said on the
