Two deputies injured by what officials are describing as a distracted driver Monday morning while helping a stranded motorist change a tire on top of an overpass in south Lubbock are recovering at home, said Sheriff Kelly Rowe.

Rowe provided updates on the crash during a Tuesday afternoon news conference downtown at the Lubbock County Sheriff's headquarters.

The deputies, 49-year-old Andrew Cavasos and 36-year-old Jorge Martinez were helping divert traffic at the top of the overpass on U.S. 87 and 98th Street to protect two people changing a tire.

The two had just returned from an unrelated call about 9:15 a.m. and saw the motorist "in a precarious spot" on the overpass and stopped to block the outside lane of traffic, Rowe said.
