HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- A 36-year-old Manchester woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to embezzling more than $860,000 from two companies she worked for over the course of around four years.

According to a release from the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut, between mid-2018 and April 2022, 36-year-old Maria Higgins of Manchester worked a bookkeeper for New England Kitchen and Bath, LLC, located in Glastonbury.

Higgins stole from the business by issuing company checks that were payable to herself, many of which had "commission" or "bonus" written on the memo line, according to the release. Higgins would then use a signature handstamp of the company's owner before depositing the checks.
