Lubbock's City Council OK'd a new city budget and a slight property tax increase that will cost the average homeowner about $15 more in the upcoming fiscal year during a second, final vote Tuesday at Citizens Tower.
The vote came after Mayor Mark McBrayer led a failed push for the council to consider additional cuts to reduce a tax increase that was blamed largely on an unanticipated decrease in property tax revenue as calculated this summer by Lubbock's Central Appraisal District.
In a 5-2 vote, the city council set a tax rate of $0.472191 per $100 of property valuation for 2026, with McBrayer and Councilman Keven Glasheen voting against the rate increase. Broken down, that means an interest and sinking tax rate of $0.107586 and $0.364605 tax rate for maintenance and operation.
