HAVERFORD TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WPVI) -- Children under 16 are now required to wear helmets when riding electric scooters or e-bikes in Haverford Township, Delaware County.
Township commissioners voted Monday night to approve the ordinance, which comes in response to growing safety concerns surrounding the popular devices.
The move follows the tragic death of 12-year-old Abigail Gillon , who was killed earlier this summer while riding an electric scooter with her best friend in Aston.
The ordinance includes a grace period through the end of the year, during which police will focus on education and issue warnings. Starting in January, violators will face a $25 fine.
State lawmakers are also seeking broader regulation efforts.
