SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - It has been unusually inactive during the past couple of weeks in the tropics but that can change quickly. Saharan dust has been the main reason for the below average season thus far.

That dust will continue to settle out of the atmosphere and we should begin to see tropical activity pick up as we head into the last couple of weeks of September. Some favorable aspects for storm development are La Nina re-establishing in the east Pacific. La Nina favors tropical development in the Atlantic basin. Very warm water in the NW Caribbean could cause storms to rapidly intensify if they were to move over that high oceanic heat energy.
