CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Officials explained Tuesday why a federal charge was brought this week in the case of a deadly stabbing on C harlotte’s light rail system last month .

On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina announced a federal charge was being brought against Decarlos Brown Jr., the man accused of stabbing a woman to death on the Charlotte light rail.

U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson explained that the federal charge -- committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system --was brought because the stabbing created fear around riding the Charlotte light rail.

“No one should sit in fear when they sit on the light rail,” Ferguson said Tuesday .
