Apple has unveiled its slimmest iPhone to ever be produced, marking what the tech giant has touted as a "breakthrough design that feels like you’re holding the future".

The Silicon Valley-based company on Wednesday launched the new iPhone Air, which has a thickness of just 5.6mm.

The model - which comes with a price tag of about $1,799 - features a titanium frame, 16.5cm display screen and Apple's Ceramic Shied coating on the back of the phone.

A more advanced protective coating, dubbed Ceramic Shield 2, has been incorporated into the front cover of the phone to deliver what Apple claims will be three times better scratch resistance.
