CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte's mayor secured the democratic nomination for November's election as the city faces national attention for safety concerns.

Incumbent Vi Lyles defeated four challengers in Tuesday's primary. Lyles received 70.75% of the votes. The closest challenger to Lyles was Brendan Maginnis with 12.19% of the votes. Jaraun "Gemini" Boyd (10%), Tigress McDaniel (4%), and Delter Guin (2%) were the other candidates.

42,442 votes were cast in Tuesday's election. The results will be canvassed at a later date.

Lyles will face Republican Terrie Donovan and Libertarian Rob Yates in the November election.

Lyles has served as Charlotte's mayor since 2017. She's Charlotte's longest-serving mayor since Pat McCrory held the position from 1995 to 2009. If she wins November's election
