A proposal to create a mental health campus in northern Michigan would provide the area with urgently needed inpatient and residential beds for youths and adults and outpatient treatments, especially after a Traverse City area knife attack by a mentally ill man, advocates said.

Kate Dahlstrom, president of the National Alliance on Mental Illness Grand Traverse, a nonprofit that provides education and support for individuals and families affected by mental illness, is among a group of mental health advocates who said the center is needed to meet the inpatient-psychiatric bed needs of northern Michigan residents.
