MADRID – The seas around Mallorca tempt swimmers almost year-round, but new threats from protest groups targeting foreign tourists mean the Spanish island could be entering troubled waters.

Despite a wave of demonstrations against overtourism , the government has yet to halt the tide of holidaymakers and foreign investors, whom activists say are ruining this jewel in the Mediterranean.

In July, some 576,000 Britons came to the Balearic Islands, a 3.36 per cent rise compared with the same month last year, according to statistics from the Balearic Island government. UK holidaymakers make up nearly 20 per cent of all foreign visitors, the largest group by nationality. New Feature
