Section V baseball to introduce safety feature that softball has used since 2004

The safety bag at first base is coming to Section V baseball in 2027.

A double base is a safety feature that allows a first baseman to hold their place on one bag, while the potential baserunner tries to reach a connected bag during an attempt to beat a throw to first base.

The National Federation of State High School Association wants its members, including the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, to make the change in order to reduce collisions and other contact at first base. Section V is a part of NYSPHSAA.
