MINOT — One of the paths we’ve taken to the sorry state of affairs that is our national political milieu is one in which the out-of-power opposition party sees its job as preventing the other party from governing.

It’s been a bipartisan tactic, in recent decades, and the most recent manifestation is Sen. Dick Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, holding up President Donald Trump’s U.S. attorney nominations, including Judge Nicholas Chase for the District of North Dakota and Daniel Rosen for the District of Minnesota.

Durbin isn’t even claiming a pretense for the blockade. As our Tasha Carvell reports, Durbin said “his action was simply following the precedent set by Republicans during former President Joe Biden’s term.”
