President Macron has appointed a new prime minister , hours after François Bayrou was forced to tender his resignation.

He has chosen 39-year-old Sébastien Lecornu, who has been serving as armed forces minister, to take up the mantle.

Lecornu is proving to be a political survivor, serving in all of Macron’s governments since 2017 and as armed forces minister under four previous prime ministers.

Whether he can survive as PM is another matter.

In Lecornu, Macron has once again chosen an ally from his own political camp, meaning yet again he will head a minority government constantly under threat from the hard left and the far right.
