NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell will make her following , making her the first New Orleans mayor charged with a federal crime while in office.
Cantrell is facing multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to obstruct justice, obstruction of justice, false statements, and false declarations before a grand jury. The indictment alleges she and her former bodyguard, Jeffrey Vappie, schemed to defraud the City of New Orleans by using city resources for personal purposes.
Federal prosecutors say Cantrell allowed Vappie to accompany her on at least 14 out-of-state trips worth over $70,000, falsely claiming they were for protection.
