BELLE ISLE, MI -- Michigan is nearly there on a trail stretching from its largest city to the remote tip of the western Upper Peninsula.

The Iron Belle Trail will extend more than 2,000 miles from Ironwood to Belle Isle, with two routes for bicycling and hiking, making it the longest state-designated trail in the nation.

The newest 5.8 mile segment on Belle Isle puts the trail at 71% completion, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

On Friday, Sept. 12 a ribbon cutting on Belle Isle will commemorate the end of phase two construction of the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Trail, which is the first stretch of the Iron Belle Trail and loops around the state park.

The trail will add new paths and connect existing trails. The DNR released this trail plan in 2018.
