DENVER (KDVR) — The United States and Colorado flags will be lowered on Thursday in honor of the victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

On Thursday, United States and Colorado flags will remain at half-staff from sunrise to sunset for National Day of Service and Remembrance, also known as Patriot Day.

The United States Congress said Patriot Day was enacted in 2001 to honor nearly 3,000 lives lost after four airplanes were hijacked by members of the Al Qaeda terrorist network. Two planes hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, while another hit the Pentagon, and the fourth crashed in southwestern Pennsylvania.
