LONGVIEW, Texas — A Longview woman has been charged with capital murder for the 1998 death of her newborn daughter.

According to police, the newborn was found dead in the area of W. Harrison Road and Jordan Valley Road in a field in June 1998. The autopsy determined the newborn was the victim of homicide. Despite the investigation, they couldn't identify the baby.

In 2025, police used advanced genetic profile technology to identify Misty Marie Mitchell as the mother. In an interview, she admitted to being the child’s mother. Based on the information obtained, she was arrested for capital murder.

According to the Gregg County Crime Stoppers , workers found the baby girl on June 25, 1998, inside a black trash bag near the corner of W. Harrison and Jordan Valley Roads.
