TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA)— September 10th marks the official peak of hurricane season, with the most tropical activity, on average, occurring between mid-August and mid-October.
However, the tropics are experiencing a highly unusual lull, and no tropical development is expected for the next 7 days.
This is the first time since 2016 that there is no named storm in the Atlantic basin on September 10th. This is also the first time that there isn't an area of interest in the National Hurricane Center's Tropical Weather Outlook since the product was created back in 2009.
On average, the Atlantic sees eight named storms, three hurricanes, and one major hurricane by September 9th.
This year, we have only had six named storms and one major hurricane, Category 5 Hurricane Erin.
