ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The issue of school choice was cited by then-state Rep. Mesha Mainor back in 2023 when she made national political headlines by switching from the Democratic party to the GOP.

Now, the two-term former lawmaker is hoping to become the first Black female to become Georgia schools superintendent after announcing her candidacy on Wednesday.

“Education shouldn’t be political; it should be personal,” Mainor said. “I left the Democratic Party because I refused to follow the political agenda of radical Democrats and the American Federation of Teachers that puts government authoritarianism over parents and children.”
