Alberta teachers are set to go on strike next month.

On Wednesday, Sept. 10, Alberta Teachers' Association president Jason Schilling said that unless a deal can be reached with the provincial government, a teacher strike will begin Monday, Oct. 6.

This announcement comes after months of negotiations between the ATA and Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA).

This past June, 94.5 per cent of nearly 39,000 teachers voted in favour of going on strike. The ATA had 120 days following that vote to take job action, with the deadline falling on Oct. 7. The union needed to give at least 72-hour notice ahead of going on strike if teachers did decide to take job action.

The last time the ATA went on strike was in 2002.
