Kate Chan felt hopeless looking for a job in Calgary this summer. After handing out hundreds of applications, the 18-year-old university student finally landed work at a boba tea shop.
“It’s not that our demographic is lazy,” Chan said. “There’s a common misconception about that. People think that we don’t want to work, but the thing is, no one actually wants to hire.”
The latest data from Statistics Canada show that Chan is far from alone. Unemployment is on the rise in Alberta, especially for young people like her.
