AUGUSTA, Maine — The first hints of autumn are beginning to touch Maine’s forests, prompting the official start of the state’s 2025 fall foliage season, the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry announced Wednesday.
DACF Fall Foliage Spokesperson Gale Ross said Maine’s weekly reports—published since 1959—will continue to guide leaf peepers toward peak color. Northern Maine, which includes zones 6 and 7 , is expected to peak in late September through early October. Central and western regions typically follow around Indigenous Peoples’ Day, with coastal and southern areas reaching their best color by mid-to-late October.
“Although this summer’s drought may temper vibrancy and shorten the season in some areas, Maine will still deliver beautiful color statewide,” Ross said.
