MOUNT OLIVE — Police are sounding an alarm about scammers who are "spoofing" caller ID on residents' phones with calls appearing to come from the local police department.
The callers, pretending to be police Chief Michael Spitzer, ask potential victims for banking information, said Sgt. Marianne Wurtenberg.
"The chief and officers here would never ask anyone for such personal information over the phone," she told the Daily Record.
Several residents have reported receiving the calls, Wurtenberg stated in a press advisory. "The scammers are providing personal information to the victims, making them believe that it is a legitimate call from the police," it warns.
