Baltimore, MD – A New Jersey man’s family visit in Maryland turned into an unexpected payday after a spur-of-the-moment decision to buy a Powerball ticket landed him a $50,000 prize.
The man was walking in a park with his nephews in College Park on Aug. 30 when he decided to purchase a ticket for that night’s drawing, which carried a $950 million jackpot. He bought five quick-pick combinations for $10 at Mundo Market on Edgewood Road.
While he didn’t snag the jackpot — which would later grow to $1.787 billion before being won in the Sept. 6 drawing — his ticket matched five out of six numbers, securing him the $50,000 payout.
He claimed the prize Sept. 8 at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore, smiling as he repeated his personal motto: “You never know.”
