Following a massive blaze Tuesday that destroyed the Jefferson Apartments in Squirrel Hill, city officials said the property now represents an “imminent danger” to the community and provided a potential timeline for its demolition.

Officials said that the owner of the 105-year-old building does not take “significant action” by the end of the day Wednesday, the city’s Department of Permits, Licenses, and Inspections will initiate a demolition itself, using the city’s general fund to pay for the project, Post-Gazette news partner KDKA-TV reported.

If the city assumes demolition of the building, which now “poses a risk of serious or life-threatening injury,” that could begin as early as Thursday, officials told the news station.
