NORMAN — Tony Crough understood the temptation for Brent Venables, among other coaches, to turn Jaren Kanak into a linebacker, because of his speed and size.

“But we knew from day one he was an offensive player,” said Crough, who became the coach at Kansas’ Hays High School when Kanak was an incoming freshman there.

Roughly eight years later, Crough is still right about Kanak. Now back on offense after three years of playing linebacker, Kanak looks natural.

Through his performance in spring practices and fall camp, Kanak was named OU’s starting tight end going into the season. After two games, he leads all Southeastern Conference tight ends and is second at his position nationally with 159 receiving yards.
