Twenty-six months after a road-rage shooting that left 6-year-old Onyx Sands paralyzed from the waist down, the now 8-year-old third grader is using her experience to help other children affected by gun violence.
Later this year or in early 2026, Onyx plans to launch her own advocacy campaign, Onyx Strong: Advocating for Safe and Healthy Kids. The initiative will focus on children affected by gun violence, including those injured by stray bullets and who survive both intentional and accidental shootings.
One crucial detail is already decided: the campaign’s logo colors. Onyx proudly announced she chose them herself – blue, purple and white – flashing a wide, toothy grin during a Sept. 10 press conference held in a small meeting room at the Galt Hotel in downtown Louisville.
