Bedford Police investigated reports of an armed individual Tuesday afternoon, determining the weapon was a pellet gun after a brief search that prompted four schools to enter secure campus mode, officials said in a news release.

Police received reports about 2 p.m. of someone walking along Gault Road carrying what appeared to be a long gun, Chief Daniel Douidi said.

Due to the road's proximity to Bedford schools, officials placed Bedford High School, Ross Lurgio Middle School, McKelvie Intermediate and Peter Woodbury Elementary in secure campus mode, according to the report.

Bedford Police, assisted by Manchester Police and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, located the individual at 2:55 p.m., officials said. The weapon was determined to be a pellet gun.
