A young girl has died after a car plunged into a dam in the state's north.

The child was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by a 68-year-old woman near Tenterfield.

Emergency services were called to a dam on the Bruxner highway near Bryans Gap Road at about 3.30pm on Wednesday, September 10, following reports of a single-vehicle crash.

A black SUV had crashed into a tree before plunging into the dam, where it had sunk.

An 11-year-old girl was pulled unresponsive from the water.

She was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics, but tragically, she died at the scene.

The driver, a 68-year-old woman, was also pulled from the water and treated by paramedics for her injuries before being taken to Tenterfield Hospital in a stable condition.
