OTTUMWA, Iowa —

Several homes in Ottumwa are in the process of being condemned, with city notices taped to the outside and tall weeds surrounding them.

The city building inspector said there are close to 10 homes currently undergoing the condemnation process. A local resident expressed concern for the children who play on his street, near two homes that were badly damaged in a fire.

"They have kids that play around here and run around here and stuff like that on the street and I'm hoping they don't go in there one day," said Daywoe Nimely.

The city stated that it always aims to preserve homes before condemning them, noting that the process is lengthy.
