Marine life receives its oxygen from warm water on the ocean's surface, but if there's no mixing with the colder water sitting below, then bottom-dwelling marine life, like lobsters, are unable to access oxygen.

Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution say 2019 was a concerning year as oxygen levels reached dangerous levels.

So much so that fishermen reported they were pulling up dead lobsters.

"It got really low because we had really intense algae blooms, and there was a species of algae that hadn't been reported before," said Malcom Scully of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
