KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Thursday marks 24 years since nearly 3,000 people were killed in terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda.

The four coordinated attacks took place on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes – crashing two of the planes into New York’s World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the fourth into a field in western Pennsylvania. It remains the deadliest terror attack in history.
