BELTON — Just over four years ago, on Sept. 4, 2021, a 24-year-old Army sergeant was shot in the head while speeding down Elms Road in an attempt to outrun a white Chrysler that was in hot pursuit. In the Chrysler were two men who would eventually become co-defendants, although it might never be known which man pulled the trigger of the 9-mm pistol that would result in the death of Fort Hood Sgt. Francine Martinez. Police said that six shots were fired into the red Dodge Challenger where she was a passenger. She died in a Temple hospital on Sept. 16, 2021.
