LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - The search for a missing child ended in tragedy Tuesday, as a 6-year-old girl drowned in a neighbor’s pool.

LMPD officers responded just before dark at 8:20 p.m. to the 2300 block of Pikes Peak Boulevard.

Officers searched the area on the ground and from the air.

“During the course of the investigation, officers received information indicating the child may have had diminished capacity and possibly was autistic,” LMPD spokesman Matt Sanders said in a written statement. “This prompted a focused search of nearby water hazards, including residential pools.”

The child was in a pool, face down and not breathing, according to an officer heard in a police radio recording.
