A crosswalk honouring veterans will be installed in front of St. Catharines city hall, with councillors opting for a more expensive and durable application to avoid it wearing down and looking “poor and disrespectful.”

City councillors unanimously approved using thermoplastic pavement marking materials at an estimated cost of $24,235 for the crosswalk, which is expected to last two to three years before it requires replacement.

A staff report recommending traditional waterborne traffic paint said it would cost about $5,725, but would likely have to be reapplied every 12 months. The annual maintenance costs would be similar to the installation.
