Thorold city councillors have opted to hold off installing a veterans crosswalk, with one wondering if there are other meaningful ways to honour soldiers instead.
Following a lopsided discussion during their Tuesday meeting, councillors chose to defer a $17,000 crosswalk eyed for the intersection of Clairmont Street and Ormond Street South to next year’s budget deliberations.
Coun. Anthony Longo suggested the crosswalk would be a waste of money that could be better spent to help veterans in need.
“I’m not going to support this and, obviously, it’s not because of the organization or cause,” said Longo.
“Every time this has come up, in terms of putting paint on a roadway, I just don’t see the financial benefits to this.
