The mother of a security guard who shot a man after an attempted armed robbery in broad daylight in the Loop Wednesday morning said she immediately rushed to the area before sharing her love and an embrace with him at the scene.

About 11:19 a.m., a male armed guard for Brinks Security Company was exiting a business in the 0-100 block of South State Street when he was approached by someone who attempted to rob him, authorities said. A struggle ensued and the security guard produced a gun and fired shots, striking the suspect.

The suspect then fled the scene with proceeds, police said, but was found and apprehended a short time later.
