Nova Scotia is now providing free respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines for infants under eight months and adults aged 75 and older. This initiative aims to protect vulnerable populations from severe complications associated with RSV, which can include bronchitis and pneumonia.

Starting today, adults 75 and older can schedule their vaccinations through local pharmacies and the province's public health agency. Appointments for these vaccines will begin on Monday, September 15.

For infants under eight months, the first dose of the RSV vaccine will be administered before they are discharged from the hospital as newborns or through their primary care providers. This proactive approach is part of the province's efforts to combat RSV, especially as the season typically starts in late fall and continues until spring.

Health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination in preventing serious health issues related to RSV, particularly for those in high-risk categories. The program reflects a commitment to public health and the well-being of Nova Scotia's most vulnerable residents.
