STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Hundreds came together Tuesday evening at Angels’ Circle in Grasmere to commemorate the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, continuing a tradition that began with a single candle.
The memorial site, located near Fingerboard Road and Hylan Boulevard, has evolved from a vacant lot into a sacred space that now displays the photographs of more than 200 Staten Islanders who perished on 9/11. Wendy Pellegrino, an Advance Woman of Achievement, established the memorial 24 years ago by placing the first candle at the location.
Family members and friends of the lost assembled at around 7 p.m. to honor their loved ones, placing flowers and mementos beneath the photographs that line the memorial.
The annual vigil has become a cornerstone of Staten Island’s 9/11 remembran
