Officers who responded to a call about a man in distress who later died at a hospital were cleared by a state grand jury of any wrongdoing, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office said Wednesday.

Three Brick police officers found Robert Gotts, 36, of Brick, naked and in a state of distress in the area of Wisteria and Vermont drives at around 4:27 p.m. on May 9, 2024, according to a news release.

Gotts was handcuffed and moved from the street to a grassy area before he was taken by ambulance to Ocean University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at the hospital at approximately 5:48 p.m., officials said.

An autopsy was performed and the medical examiner concluded the manner of death was accidental and the cause of death was intoxication, officials said.
