COLO, Iowa —

For just under a century, travelers from across the country have stopped in the small Story County town, Colo.

The town, and specifically one street corner, is known as the "Crossroads of the Nation," marking the point where the national Lincoln and Jefferson highways meet.

And on that street corner is none other than Niland's Cafe.

Decorated with nostalgic checkered flooring and old photographs, it's obvious the cafe's been around for a while — 99 years, to be exact.

And Manager Kelsey Reed says cafes like these are a dying breed.

"Fast food has kind of taken over," she said. "People are all about the instant gratification and hurry up and get done and move on to your next spot instead of sitting down and joining in with family and communicating."
