A BBC expert has explained when people will receive a key letter from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) explaining if they will get a £300 payment this year. The winter fuel payment has been reinstated for nine million pensioners this winter - after it was axed to save money in 2024.

Speaking on BBC Morning Live, BBC’s Cost of Living Correspondent, Colletta Smith said people need to take care about text messages which were currently being used by scammers, trying to entice people to apply for the money. She explained in almost all cases the money, which is £2-300 will be paid into accounts automatically.

For people to claim the money they need to have been the right age during ‘qualifying week’. This means they can get a Winter Fuel Payment if they were born before 22 Septembe
