LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Las Vegas marquees lit a tribute to Charlie Kirk, a free speech advocate, who was assassinated while engaging in a student debate on a university campus.

While speaking at Utah Valley University (UVU), the first stop of the Turning Point USA “American Comeback” tour, Kirk was shot and killed in what authorities say was a targeted attack. Texts obtained by 8 News Now show the alert sent to students across the campus.

“UVU Alert: A single shot was fired on campus toward a visiting speaker,” the 11:42 a.m. university text alert read. “Police are investigating now, suspect in custody.”

However, authorities released the person in custody and are now asking for the public’s help in identifying the shooter at the outdoor event.
