RIVERSIDE — More than one hundred people gathered at the river on Saturday to honor Capt. Jacob Gearhart, Revolutionary War hero and leading citizen of early Riverside. At least a dozen of those in attendance were direct descendants of Gearhart or his brother, William, seven generations removed from their arrival here in 1790.
At the ceremony, Scout Troop 33 raised the colors, and an Honor Guard from American Legion Post 40 performed a rifle salute and played taps. In between were speeches by representatives of the local D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution), who spearheaded the project, and the mayor of Riverside, Todd Oberdorf. State Sen.
